United Arab Emirates is a constitutional federation of seven emirates named Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Qaiwain, Ras Al-Khaimah and Fujairah. UAE federation was established in 1971. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was elected as a president by state on 2nd December, 1971 and ruled up to his death 2nd November, 2004.

Political System

After establishment of Federation in 1971, United Arab Emirates gave a different shape to the national identity through its federal status. UAE political system enabling the country to develop a modern administrative structure while, at the same time, ensuring that the best of the traditions of the past are maintained, adapted and preserved.

In 1971 a new federal system of government was established which includes Supreme Council, a Cabinet, or Council of Ministers, a parliamentary body, the Federal National Council, and an independent judiciary, at the apex of which is the Federal Supreme Court.

Rulers of seven emirates are the members of the Supreme Council which is a top policy making body. They also elect a President and a Vice-President from amongst their number, to serve for a five-year term of office.

Foreign Policy

Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, first president of UAE laid down the guiding principles on which foreign policy of UAE is dependent. These principles are derived from his deep belief in the need for justice in international dealings between states, including the necessity of adhering to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of others and the pursuit, wherever possible, of peaceful resolutions of disputes, together with a support for international institutions, such as the United Nations. The main feature of the country's foreign policy is to develop the closer ties with its neighbours in the Arabian Peninsula.
